The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, Qatar

The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ is the first World Cup ever to be held in the Arab world, seeing HED working with Foster+Partners on the Lusail Iconic Stadium and with celebrated Qatari architect, Ibrahim Jaidah of The Arab Engineering Bureau on the Al Thumama Stadium, Doha.

The former is the centrepiece of Lusail City and will both open and conclude the tournament, offering an enduring public realm and community space as an integral part of the urban fabric of the new city.

Al Thumama Stadium is rooted firmly in the urban community of Doha and in legacy mode, the stadium’s capacity is reduced to meet local needs and provide quality sporting infrastructure to developing nations all within the context of a redesigned park of 7 hectares.

Location: Qatar
Client: The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy
Architect: Foster+Partners (Lusail) & The Arab Engineering Bureau (Al Thumama)
Awards:

The stadium received the MIPIM/Architectural Review Future Project Award for the best design in the sport and stadiums category in May 2018.

It is an arena that symbolises Qatar’s youth, the country’s emergence as a major player on the global sporting scene and the shared Arab heritage that inspired its creation.
