Hulbert Junior School, Winchester

The Inspiration Garden, in East Hampshire, was the result of the school’s desire to improve its external space.

The existing playground was an open expanse of tarmac with a grass sports pitch separated by very tired planting beds.

After discussions with the staff and workshops with the pupils, HED produced a design based upon the theme of the ‘Lost Island’ and the ‘Four Sacred Winds’. The proposals have allowed the area to be zoned and improved to provide teaching spaces, seating, quite areas and shade.

The project was completed in 2006.
